WE ARE SIMPLY THE STEWARDS OF IT.

WE TAKE THAT WITH GREAT RESPONSIBILITY.

BUT THIS BRAND IS SOMETHING THAT'S BEEN CREATED BY... BEFORE THE CITY WAS FOUNDED. THE ORIGINAL FOUNDERS.

AND PEOPLE THROUGH OUR TIME THAT HAVE SHAPED THE CITY TO MAKE IT WHAT IT IS TODAY. AND YOU KNOW, THIS IS NOT SOMETHING WE TAKE LIGHTLY. IT IS NOT SOMETHING YOU WANT TO DO ALL THE TIME. AFTER MANY CONVERSATIONS WITH THE BOARD, STAKEHOLDERS, STAFF, AND OTHER COMMUNITY MEMBERS, WE FELT IT WAS A GOOD TIME FOR US TO UPDATE AND UPGRADE OUR CREATIVE DESIGN AND REALLY SHOWCASE ABILENE'S LATEST OFFERINGS. AND YOU KNOW, THAT STARTS WITH EFFECTIVE PLACE-BRANDING. FORECAST IT WILL HELP US COMPETE WITH ATTRACTING VISITORS, TALENTED PEOPLE, INWARD INVESTMENT, NEW BUSINESSES, AND STUDENTS.

AND I JUST CLICK THE ARROW. GREAT.

AND I'LL START WITH THIS. AND THIS IS A QUOTE BY A FAMOUS LOGO DESIGNER. A GOOD LOGO IS NOT ABOUT WHAT ONE LIKES OR DISLIKES. IT IS ABOUT WHAT WORKS.

THIS IS SOMETHING I HAD TO REMIND MYSELF TO.

TAKE MY PERSONAL TASTE THAT MAYBE I LIKE A CERTAIN DEPOGFY OR CERTAIN STYLE. TO SEPARATE MYSELF FROM THAT AND FIND OUT WHAT IDENTITY IS BEST FOR THE CITY, FOR THE ORGANIZATION AND WHAT WE ARE TRYING TO DO.

WE STARTED THIS PROJECT FOUR MONTHS AGO.

WE SURVEYED BOARD MEMBERS, STAKEHOLDERS.

WE HOSTED FOCUS GROUPS WITH STAFF.

WE HAD MANY MEETINGS WITH THE DESIGN TEAM.

SO I WILL SET THE STAGE AND JUST LET... KIND OF REMIND EVERYONE.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD LOGO, YOU KNOW, THREE KEY PRINCIPLES.

IS IT APPROPRIATE? IS THE LOGO APPROPRIATE FOR THE ORGANIZATION? IS IT IN LINE WITH OUR MISSION? IS IT SIMPLE? IS IT UNIQUE WITHOUT BEING COMPLICATED? TOO MANY MOVING PARTS BECOMES CONFUSING AND EASILY FORGOTTEN. SIT MEMORABLE? IS IT DISTINCTIVE? IS IT EASILY REMEMBERED? ONE RULE OF THUMB IS, CAN A FIVE-YEAR-OLD KID DRAW IT? YOU KNOW, WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT IT IS MEMORABLE.

OUR OBJECTIVES, WHEN WE STARTED THIS OUT WAS WE WANTED TO MAKE SURE WE TELL ABILENE'S STORY. WE WANT A DESIGN THAT LOOKS GOOD TODAY BUT ALSO IN TEN YEARS. WE WANTED TO MAKE SURE WE HAD A DESIGN THAT INSPIRED AND INFLUENCED PEOPLE TO LOOK DEEPER AND FIND OUT MORE AND LEARN ABOUT ABILENE.

AND REALLY START TO SHAPE AND INFLUENCE THE THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS AND PERCEPTIONS PEOPLE HAVE ABOUT THE CITY.

THIS IS THE PREVIOUS LOGO DESIGN.

YOU KNOW, IT HAS BEEN USED MORE THAN A DECADE.

WE CAN ALL AGREE THAT ABILENE 2008 IS MUCH DIFFERENT THAN THE ABILENE OF TODAY. I MEAN, THE WORLD WAS DIFFERENT.

RIRIT? THE IPHONE WAS INVENTED IN 2007. I THINK 83% OF THE PEOPLE AROUND THE GLOBE USE SMART PHONES. THE WAY WE LOOK AT DESIGN AND THE WAY IT FUNCTIONS IN THE WORLD IS MUCH DIFFERENT IN 2008 THAN TODAY. WE NEED ADVERSE TILL DESIGN WITH A STRONG VISUAL IDENTITY. A MODERN DESIGN THAT HIGH LITHES... HIGHLIGHTS ABILENE'S DISTINCTIVE QUALITIES.

THAT IS PHRASE THAT I KEPT IN MIND.

YOU KNOW, I HAD TO KEEP ON REMINDING EVERYONE.

YOU KNOW, ABILENE IS A CITY THAT HONORS ITS HERITAGE WHILE EMBRACING ITS FUTURE. THEREFORE, AN EFFECTIVE LOGO FOR THE DESTINATION MUST BE INSPIRED BY TRADITION BUT MADE FOR TODAY.

THAT WAS KIND OF THE KEY ELEMENT THAT WE WANTED TO HAVE FRONT OF MIND. EVERY DECISION AND ELEMENT OF THE LOGO IS THOUGHTFUL AND INTENTIONAL.

WE FEEL ABILENE RESIDENTS WILL BE PROUD OF THE DESIGN AND RALLY AROUND ITS PURPOSE. IT STARTS WITH THE WORD MARK.

WE AIM FOR SIMPLICITY, CONCENTRATED EFFORTS ON A MODERN TO POGFY TOPOGRAPHY. WHEN I FIRST GOT HERE, I REMEMBER WANTING TO GET MY HANDS ON THESE BRICKS.

I THOUGHT THEY WERE SO COOL. NOW I HAVE, LIKE, THREE OR FOUR OF THEM. I LOVE EACH ONE OF THEM.

IF ONE OF THE THINGS YOU WILL RECOGNIZE IS THAT THERE IS PROBABLY 16 DIFFERENT VERSIONS. I TRY TO LEARN AS MUCH AS I COULD ABOUT THESE. 16 DIFFERENT VERSIONS.

FOR THE MOST PART, THEY FOLLOW THIS SAME STYLE OF TOPOGRAPHY.

AND WHAT MORE SYMBOLIC THAN THE BRICKS? THAT PAVED THE WAY FOR ABILENE'S FUTURE.

THE LANDMARKS LIKE THE ABILENE SIGN AT THE T&P DEPOT.

THINK ABOUT WHEN THE VISITORS WERE COMING TO ABILENE MORE THAN A HUNDRED YEARS AGO. THEY SAW THAT WHITE PLAQUE WITH THE BLACK LETTERING. IT SAID ABILENE.

THEY KNEW THEY HAD ARRIVED AT THEIR DESTINATION.

THAT IS EXACTLY THE FEELINGS WE ARE TRYING TO EVOKE TODAY.

THE ABILENE COURTS BUILT IN 1930.

I ENJOYED LEARNING ABOUT IT. BUILT IN THE 190.

A PRECURSOR TO THE MODERN MOTEL. ON THE BANKHEAD HIGHWAY.

ADVERTISING THE REPORTING, WEST TEXAS' FINEST TOURIST CAMP.

THESE WORD MARKS STILL LOOK GOOD TODAY BECAUSE THEY ARE TIMELESS.

THAT IS WHAT A GOOD LOGO SHOULD DO.

IT SHOULD BE TIMELESS. SO HERE IS THE WORD MARK.

YOU CAN SEE HOW THE INSPIRATION FROM THESE HISTORICAL LANDMARKS AND THESE ICONS THROUGHOUT THE CITY IS REFLECTED IN A MODERN DESIGN. OF COURSE, WE PUT TEXAS SO PEOPLE KNOW THAT IT IS NOT KANSAS.

WE PUT THE ESTABLISHED 1881. THAT GIVES IT THAT VINTAGE LOOK.

AND THE STAR THERE. REPRESENTED... REPRESENTATIVE OF THE STAR USED IN THE MUNICIPAL LOGO.

AND WE NEED AN ICON. WHAT WETTER ICON THAN BUFFALO? WE HAD THE DESIGN OF A CUSTOM ILLUSTRATION OF A BUFFALO.

WE ALL KNOW BUFFALO IS PART OF ABILENE'S HISTORY.

IT PERSONIFIES THE CONCEPT OF CHANGE.

FROM HARSH WINTERS TO SEVERE DROUGHTS.

IT HAS... IT LIVES IN EXTREME WEATHER CONDITIONS.

I THINK THAT SAYS A LOT ABOUT IT.

IT HAS OVERCOME URBANIZATION OF ITS HABITAT AND WAS NEARLY HUNTED TO EXTINCTION, YET, IT STILL EXISTS TODAY.

AND YIELDING TO FATE, YET MINDFUL OF THE EVER-CHANGING WORLD, IT ADAPTED AND IT SURVIVED.

LIKE THE BUFFALO, ABILENE SYMBOLIZES STRENGTH, STABILITY, PERSEVERANCE, AND DETERMINATION. AND SO HERE IS THE CUSTOM ILLUSTRATION OF THE BUFFALO ICON.

AND THESE ARE DONE IN BLACK AND WHITE SO YOU CAN SEE THE CONTRAST OF THE DESIGN. IT SHOULD ALWAYS WORK IN BLACK AND WHITE FIRST. THEN YOU ADD THE COLOR TO IT.

AND THAT IS HOW THE DESIGN WAS CREATED.

THE COLORS ARE VERY IMPORTANT, THOUGH.

SO MY FIANCEE AND I, WHEN WE MOVED HERE, WE WOULD NOTICE THE ABILENE SUNSETS. YOU KNOW, WE JUST LIKED THE SUNSET. WE REALLY APPRECIATED IT.

WE WOULD SIT OUTSIDE ON OUR PATIO AND ENJOY IT.

WE STARTED GETTING THESE FOCUS GROUPS.

I NOTICED THAT OTHERS WERE ALSO POINTING THIS OUT.

WE WANTED TO DRAW ON THE GEOGRAPHY AND THE TOPOGRAPHY AND THE ELEMENTS IN THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT AROUND HERE TO ENFIRE COLORS. WE FELT... WHEN OTHER PEOPLE STARTED MENTIONING THE SUNSET, I SAID, THIS IS A THING.

THIS ISN'T JUST US. SO WE TOOK LMGHTS FROM A BEAUTIFUL SUNSET WHERE THE SUN IS A DEEP WARM ORANGE AND IT FADES UP INTO THE MIDNIGHT BLUE SKY.

AND I'M DRIVING AROUND TOWN MORE.

I SEE RED DIRT. RIGHT? IT IS REALLY ORANGE CLAY. IT IS THIS CLAY SOIL.

RIGHT? IT REMINDS ME OF THIS COLOR, TOO. THAT REINFORCED THAT DECISION TO GO WITH THAT. I MEAN, YOU KNOW, YOU KNOW, THIS IS THE SOIL THE CITY WAS BUILT ON.

I MEAN, WHAT MORE SYMBOLIC CAN YOU GET.

RIGHT? BUT WHEN IT COMES TO COLOR THEORY AND LOGO DESIGN, ORANGE STANDS FOR FRIENDLY, CHEERFUL, COMPASSION, BLUE IS TRUST, DEPENDABLE, STRENGTH.

WHEN PAIRED TOGETHER, BLUE AND ORANGE INSPIRE CONFIDENCE AND KNOWLEDGE. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THOSE WORDS DESCRIBES THE COMMUNITY, AND I'M VERY PROUD OF THAT.

THE PRIMARY LOGO, THE PRIMARY LOGO IS THE VERSION THAT WILL BE USED MOST FREQUENTLY. AND HERE ARE ALL THE ELEMENTS WHEN PUT TOGETHER. WHEN COMBINED, THE LOGO TYPE, ILLUSTRATION, AND COLOR PALETTE CREATE A LOGO THAT TRULY REPRESENTS ABILENE'S DISTINCTIVE QUALITIES.

AND THEN THERE IS THE REVERSE VERSION WHERE WE HAVE THAT IVORY OR CREAM COLORED BACKGROUND WITH THE ORANGE AND THE BLUE.

AND AGAIN, THE STRESS TEST. RIGHT? DOES IT STILL LOOK GOOD IN BLACK AND WHITE? THEN OF COURSE, A GOOD LOGO DESIGN SHOULD HAVE A SECONDARY LOGO. THAT FIRST ONE IS MORE OF A HORIZONTAL FEEL. MAYBE IT WOULD GO GREATER ON A BUSINESS CARD OR LETTERHEAD. YOU ALSO NEED TO HAVE VERTICAL VERSION. THE SECONDARY LOGO IS USED WHEN THE PRIMARY LOGO DOESN'T FIT OR FEEL RIGHT IN A PARTICULAR CONTEXT. THIS DESIGN, LIKE I SAID, HAS MORE VERTICAL THAN HORIZONTAL. IT STAYS TRUE TO THE IDENTITY.

AND THERE IS THE DESIGN. AND OF COURSE, IN BLACK AND WHITE. AND THEN WE HAVE ALTERNATE LOGO MARKS. THE ALTERNATE MARKS ARE USED TO COMPLEMENT THE PRIMARY, SECONDARY LOGOS.

WHERE IT ALREADY APPEARS. RIGHT? A GOOD EXAMPLE WOULD BE MAYBE ON A SOCIAL MEDIA ICON OR YOU KNOW,

AND WE FELT THAT, YOU KNOW, AROUND TOWN, AGAIN, DRAWING INSPIRATION FROM AROUND TOWN, WHETHER IT IS HAVING A COFFEE... OF COURSE, THE AIRPORT'S LOCATION IDENTIFIER, WE FELT, WAS THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY FOR US TO REINFORCE THE ABBREVIATIONS OF THE CITY AND OF THE STATE. AND REALLY MAKE IT A FUN MONIKER FOR US TO USE FOR MARKETING PURPOSES AS AN ALTERNATIVE LOGO DESIGN. HERE IS ANOTHER ALTERNATIVE DESIGN. THIS ONE REALLY COULD BE USED MOST LIKELY WHENEVER WE ARE CREATING AN ADVERTISEMENT AND THERE IS A LOT GOING ON IN THE IMAGE.

AND PUTTING THIS, YOU KNOW, SHIELD OR THE PLATE BEHIND IT REALLY KIND OF HELPS IT SEPARATE FROM THE BUSYNESS OF THE IMAGE.

THE FIRST ONE, THE VERY FIRST ONE IS A PUBLIC SAFETY ISSUE.

THE FIRE STATION NUMBER NINE. LIKE I SAID, I THINK WE NEED IT.

WE CAN SAVE ONE FAMILY'S LIFE, ONE PERSON FROM AN AUTOMOBILE CRASH OR SOMETHING, WE NEED IT. YOU KNOW, MAYBE YEARS FROM NOW, THERE WILL BE A COUNCIL UP HERE, AND THEY WILL BE GIVING OUT AN AWARD FOR THAT STATION. BECAUSE THEY WERE ABLE TO SAVE A LIFE BECAUSE THEY WERE CLOSE ENOUGH TOS TO GET THERE.

HOW WOULD THAT LOOK? SO IF HE BROUGHT IN HEAVY EQUIPMENT TO CLEAR THAT LAND BECAUSE THERE ARE BIG TREES AND THERE IS A LOT OF BRUSH, IF THAT GAS METER GOT DAMAGED THERE, COULD BE AN EXPLOSION, AND A LOT OF PEOPLE HURT.

AGAIN, IF HE WERE TO DO EXCAVATING TO BUILD, WOULD THIS WATER LINE GET RUPTURED? SO ANOTHER THING ABOUT THAT IS THERE IS A STRING OF 100-PLUS-YEAR-OLD OAK TREES ON THEIR PROPERTY AND SEVERAL OTHER PROPERTIES, AND THEY WOULD HAVE TO BE REMOVED. NOW, ABOUT A HUNDRED FEET AWAY, THERE IS GOING TO BE ANOTHER SET OF ROADS THAT PEOPLE COMING IN AND OUT ALSO.

I THINK TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS ARE GOING TO INCREASE.

ALSO THAT, METER... I'M NOT AN EXPERT.

IF THAT THING GETS HIT BY TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS OR IF IT STAYS IN PLACE AND THE EXTRA TRAFFIC COMING IN AND OUT, IF IT GETS NAILED, IT IS GOING TO BLOW. IT MAY TAKE MY HOUSE WITH IT.
